A medley of extemporania;
And love is a thing that can never go wrong;
And I am Marie of Roumania." -- Dorothy Parker

Seven new Rayne Fellowships for Choreographers worth up to £15,000 each have been
announced with a special call for applications from choreographers working in the
commercial sector and the ballet world. The Rayne Fellowships, established by the
Rayne Foundation in partnership with Arts Council England, encourage and support
artists to connect more strongly with society and to act as bridge builders.

A brochure and application form can be downloaded at

Deadline for applications is 5pm, Friday 16 February 2007.

The Fellowships are an imaginative move to address the growth of intolerance,
incomprehension and insularity in society by utilising the strong communication
skills of choreographers.

The first Rayne Fellowships were awarded in May 2006 to four choreographers: Adam
Benjamin, Laila Diallo, Luca Silvestrini and Sue Smith. Since winning they have each
established relationships with organisations that will widen their intellectual and
emotional curiosity and help to develop their entrepreneurial skills.

So far, the existing Fellows have worked, or have plans to work, in a wide range of
contexts including Dartmoor Prison; the Soil Association; Plymouth Marine Science
Partnership; the Plymouth Consortium for Cultural Diversity and the Arts; the
Institute of Digital and Technology (i-DAT) at Plymouth University; Dance Voice
Bristol, Time Together in Bristol, Dance United (an education organisation working
with young people at risk); Tate St Ives; and the Whitechapel Art Gallery.

Cornwall-based Rayne Fellow Adam Benjamin says of working in Dartmoor Prison: "The
secondment has been a very important one for me. It has shown me a part of the
world (on my doorstep) I might never otherwise have seen".

Choreographer Sue Smith says: "I have (or will) among other things; attend life
drawing classes, go out on an ocean trawl, join young homeless people in their arts
sessions and take part in a mentor scheme for recent asylum seekers. Each
secondment is already taking us somewhere else, to new ideas, perspectives and to
find new ways to continue to enrich and enliven each others practice".

Laila Diallo says: "The Fellowship allows me to invest time and energy in learning
about people and from them, share thoughts and ideas with them and bring some of
these new findings and experiences to my work".

This is the final chance for Choreographers to apply for the Rayne Fellowships. In
the future the Rayne Foundation will be continuing the scheme in other areas of
culture and society. Ultimately, the Rayne Foundation intends to build a network of
Fellows enabling them to use their influence to find solutions to the problems and
needs facing society today.

Island Moving Co. Announces Finalists for

Choreographers Competition 2008

Island Moving Company, Newport's resident dance company,
announces the three finalists for its second Choreographers Competition, to
choose a work to be commissioned for the Company's 2009 season. The Company
has again received generous support from the Rhode Island Foundation to
mount this vital project in the continuation of the Company's 26 year long
mission of commissioning new dance works.

From submissions received from around the country and abroad,
Island Moving Co. Artistic Director Miki Ohlsen has chosen three
choreographers whose work reflects the diverse nature of the Island Moving
Co.'s repertoire. Each choreographer will travel to Newport to work with
the Company's dancers for a week. At the close of the week, the public and
supporters will get a chance to meet the choreographers and sample their
style and vision in an informal showing at the Company's studios at 3
Charles Street, off Washington Square in Newport. The showings are at 7pm
on October 3, 10 & 17 and are free.

The first of the three choreographers to visit Newport will be
Gabriel Otevrel, currently Resident Choreographer at Alaska Dance Theatre.
Otevrel has taught and choreographed at the Augsburg Ballett und Tanzforum
Otevrel, The Bristol Ballet and with his own company, Dance Theatre
Suitcase. He performed with Boston Ballet, The Basler Ballet, and Maurice
Bejart's Ballet Lausanne and received his training at the John Cranko School
in Stuttgart and Monte Carlo's Princess Grace Academy.

Kelly Ann Sloan, the second week finalist, is a young
choreographer whose work has been shown at New York's Ballet Builders
Showcase, Pointeworks in Canton, Ohio and at the Dance Under the Stars
Showcase in Palm Desert, California, where she received the finalist award.
She performed with the Los Angeles Ballet under the direction of Colleen
Neary and Thordal Christensen and at Cincinnati Ballet under Victoria
Morgan. She graduated from Indiana University with a degree in Ballet and

Adrienne Westwood works in New York and has New England ties,
having studied at Summer Stages Dance in Concord, Massachusetts and
performed an evening of her work at Jacob's Pillow in the Inside/Out series
last summer. She also summered in Little Compton growing up. With her VIA
Dance Collaborative, she has presented work at New York's White Wave
Festival, Dancenow at Dance Theatre Workshop and at various other venues,
including the Dance Under the Stars Festival, where she also was a finalist.
She graduated from the North Carolina School of the Arts.

The winner of the Island Moving Company's Choreographers
Competition will be commissioned to create a new work for the Company's 27th
season. For more information about the Competition, visit <> or call

Call for Choreographers...

September 10th-12th, 2009

Dear Artists,

This year marks the third annual DANCE GALLERY Festival, produced by VON USSAR
danceworks. We are hosting a call for concert dance choreographers to be presented
at our show this Fall.
Due to the large number of submissions last year, our festival will be expanded from
two to three days in order to accommodate more artists.

Deadline for submissions is April 27th, 2009 and must be postmarked by this date.

Application Fee: $25 per piece

VON USSAR danceworks is a modern dance company providing an exciting opportunity for
choreographers to present their work and be a part of an evocative new festival of
concert dance in NYC.
We are committed to providing a venue where both emerging and established artists
can share the stage to present new dance works to both an avid audience and dance
professionals alike. The concept for the festival was established in response to the
ever-rising costs of theater rentals that are putting a strain on artists who would
love to present their work in a larger venue, but have to compromise to fit into
smaller more affordable spaces.

THE DATE: September 10th, 11th and 12th , 2009

After two successful years of sold out performances, Dance Gallery festival has
proved that an event like this is very much needed in NYC.
Some of the choreographers presented over the past two years were: Camille Brown,
Jana Hicks, Sidra Bell, Earl Mosley, Diane McCarthy, Christian von Howard, Patrick
Corbin, Carol Dilley, Isabel Gotzkowsky, Iquail Shaheed, Mojca Ussar, Gerry
Houlihan, Pascal Rekoert, Charles Anderson, Ray Mercer and Rick McCullough.

Due the recent economic crisis we are all facing, we have decided not to raise this
years fees for applications and production.

All entries must include a DVD of the proposed work (8-10 minutes max). You CAN
submit more than one work. No works in progress or promotional videos please!
Please include a nonrefundable application fee of $25 for each work submitted, a
current resume or bio (including email address
and contact information), a description of the proposed work(s), and SASE (self
addressed and stamped envelope) if you would like your materials returned.
All proposed work should not be performed in or around NYC three months prior to or
after the festival.

Please submit the applications to:

VON USSAR danceworks
442 Henry St. #3
Brooklyn, NY 11231

If your work is chosen you will be notified by May 8, 2009, and a $200 production
Fee will be due on July 31st, 2009.

As a performing artist of the festival you will be provided with two (2)
performances in a state of the art theater, professional lighting, publicity and a
DVD copy of your work.

For more information please contact Astrid von Ussar at: or 917-363-4229.
